In the music industry today, it’s rare to find an Asian lead singer in an American band. The up and coming band Dexter’s Kin breaks out of the mold with Paul Benedict, the group’s Filipino American lead singer. Surrounded by four other musicians including Hispanic pianist Gisel Costa, the music of this diverse and talented band crosses cultural boundaries. I had the opportunity to interview and write the band’s official biography. It is my pleasure to introduce Dexter’s Kin.

BIOGRAPHY: Dexter’s Kin

Dexter’s Kin, the New York City-based Alternative/Rock/Pop band formed by lead singer and songwriter Paul Benedict, touts an undeniable connection between its music and fans. The band, named after Paul’s late brother, honors his memory through its inspiring lyrics and captivating melodies. Its songs hold listeners rapt with its blend of edgy pop tunes, high-energy beats, and heartfelt ballads. Paul’s soulful voice brims with honesty, inviting listeners to follow him on his journey.

Paul reflects, “Every song I’ve written has been related to my experiences with family. My brother’s death made such an impact in my life. One way or another he’s influenced my music. It’s the core of who I am saying that I’m Dexter’s Kin.”

The band will be releasing its highly anticipated self-titled album in late Summer 2011. Unlike Paul’s solo release of Metamorphose in 2009, the new album will feature its current lineup of band members. Dexter’s Kin plans to perform live in the tri-state New York area before expanding to neighboring states. The band also seeks to build long lasting relationships with other indie bands that share the same drive and ambition to deliver engaging and compelling shows. Fans can follow Dexter’s Kin through its website and multiple social media outlets.

Dexter’s Kin completed its present ensemble of band members in early 2011. In addition to lead vocalist Paul Benedict, band members include Bryan Christopher (guitar), Gisel Costa (keyboards), Jason Juliette (drums/percussions), and Andrew Lynch (bass). The group has already released several dynamic videos that highlight its energetic music, spirited personality, and star-quality image. The band is also working on an original collection of songs for an expected album release in 2012.

The new self-titled album and the band’s live performances mirror the dedicated collaboration of the artists who form Dexter’s Kin. The connectedness between them reveals itself through its impactful music. Paul reflects, “Dexter is biologically my brother. But without these four strong, supportive, and talented musicians who I call brothers and sister, this project wouldn’t have come to light. They’re my family. We are Dexter’s Kin.”

  1. Thanks for calling attention to this band! Asian Americans are so underrepresented in the music industry. I’ll have to keep an eye for Dexter’s Kin.
