Warning: Toddlers at Play – My Nose Knows

Energetic toddlers can be
hazardous to noses.

Kids have hard heads. I experienced this the other day when the back of my toddler’s head crashed into my nose while playing. I heard an unmistakable crack upon impact.  She was fine and didn’t cry, but my eyes sure watered. Thankfully no blood spurted, though the bridge of my nose swelled and turned a nice shade of purple.

My friend’s son recently broke her nose the same way. She had a hairline fracture that her doctor said only time would heal. I suspected that I might have sustained a similar injury, but was out of town when my nasal fender bender occurred. I wasn’t sure if I needed to see a doctor, but visited my sister’s neighbor who fortuitously is an ENT surgeon. He examined my nose and determined I either had a hairline fracture or just a really bad bruise. Without x-rays he couldn’t make a determination, but explained they were not necessary since the treatment would be the same. Like my friend, I needed to give my nose time to heal.

Within a day the swelling and bruising reduced. Thankfully my nose is still straight. The surgeon said that in a few months I may notice a bump where the bones had healed. If I do end up with one, I likely won’t mess with my changed nose unless it affects my breathing. It’ll just be a permanent reminder about the wonders and hazards of the toddler years.

  1. Baby J is very cute but can be very hyper and always likes to jump on the bed and fall down.

  2. Lol, yes – they do have very hard heads! But thankfully all my head bumps to the nose didn’t do as much damage. Sorry to hear about your injury! Be sure to take a picture to show Baby J one day!

  3. Ouch, I know the feeling. It has happened to me quite a few times because my son always wants to wrestle. I usually pass him off to daddy, but when daddy’s not around, I usually give in and always wind up getting injured somehow.
