Lucky Big Red Envelopes $50 Value
Red envelopes, called hong bao in Mandarin and lai see in Cantonese, are a traditional way in Chinese culture for giving money to others. The color red represents energy, happiness, and good luck; therefore wrapping money in these red packets symbolizes wishing happiness and blessings to the recipient.
Though red envelopes are often associated with Chinese New Year, they’re also used for monetary gifts for birthdays, bridal showers, weddings, baby showers, births, anniversaries, graduations, and any other large celebration.
Bicultural Mama has teamed up with the blog The Dumpling Mama to offer two packets of lucky big envelopes worth $50 available on The Dumpling Mama’s online shop. Each envelope uses thicker, high quality stock paper with foil printing and displays Chinese characters with English translations. Inside each envelope is a card for gift givers to write notes to recipients. The envelopes measure 10.5 cm x 19 cm (4.1” x 7.5”) and fit unfolded U.S. dollar bills.
Two big red envelope designs are available: Happy and Luck. The Happy design features the Double Happiness Chinese symbol made up of two individual characters that mean happy. The symbol always reminded me of two people standing next to each other like a bride and groom. Perhaps this is one reason why the double happiness symbol is customarily displayed at weddings on banners. Envelopes are available in gold or red colors.
