Chinese New Year Lucky Red Envelopes
With Chinese New Year approaching on February 8, it’s time to get prepped with lucky red envelopes. Traditionally, adults give money in red envelopes to unmarried relatives and friends to wish them a good year.
Chrissy Jee, mother of two and The Dumpling Mama blog founder, has launched an online shop featuring her lucky red envelope designs. She created the envelopes after experiencing frustration at the lack of high quality red envelopes found in stores. I can relate as the store-bought envelopes I’ve found typically were made of very thin paper that ripped easily. Most featured an old-fashion design of an ancient Chinese person in festive clothes.
Chrissy’s envelopes use a thicker, high quality stock paper with foil printing. Her designs are a fresh, modern take of the old designs, displaying a bold foil Chinese character with English translation to represent Asian American culture. Chrissy offers three envelope designs for Chinese New Year: Luck, Good Health, and Long Life
She uses red and gold colors on her envelopes. Red symbolizes good luck, prosperity, and fire to ward off evil spirits, while gold is considered the most beautiful color in Chinese culture and also symbolizes good luck. The envelopes measure 8 cm x 11.5 cm and fits folded U.S. dollars. Envelopes can also be used to give gifts not only for Chinese New Year, but also for other occasions such as birthdays, graduation and holidays.
