Interested in learning a new language, but afraid of losing motivation due to boring textbooks, drills, and rote memorization? Now there’s a more natural and entertaining way to learn languages. FluentU teaches languages through real world videos, and Bicultural Mama has partnered with them to give away a 1 year subscription for full access to FluentU!

FluentU takes authentic, native language content like music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks and turns them into language learning lessons. Users learn though engaging and immersive visual and audio experiences. Whether you’re a newbie or an advanced learner, FluentU personalizes your experience.

FluentU teaches Chinese, Spanish, French, English, German, Japanese, and Italian. Families love using FluentU, though the program is geared more towards adults.

Interactive captions are subtitled and translated. Just click on a word to see an in-context definition and example sentences. Users are in control – they can pause the video, look up a word, and continue on. One participant says, “Learning Chinese almost becomes and afterthought to the fact that you are watching cool videos.”

Users can partake in the quiz sections using videos. Another user states, “The quiz sections are the most successful I’ve seen to integrate spaced learning of vocab, and not be bored out of your mind. The power of seeing an actor speak, hearing their pronunciation, and linking it to the Chinese character re-enforces learning. It is challenging and makes you think about how the Chinese language works.”

FluentU gives users access any time they want to learn. Audio dialogues are downloadable from the website for offline listening. Due to the success of FluentU online, the company is now launching an iPhone app. Android and iOS versions are coming soon.

  2. We’re a bilingual home as well and it would be great for my husband to practice his Spanish with this program!

  3. I think knowing more than one language is an important skill – one that I do not have. I am terrible at languages.
