Of course everyone wishes for good fortune and prosperity, thus the rituals, traditions, and symbolic foods that people who celebrate this holiday make sure to follow.
Want to find out more? I wrote the kickoff post for the Chinese New Year series for the site Multicultural Kid Blogs. In it, I inform about some basics about Chinese New Year, as well as include a few forecast themes for the year from astrologers who are in tune with the Chinese calendar. Here’s a snippet from my post called, “What to Expect in the Year of the Monkey for Chinese New Year”:
- Things will get accomplished, but largely through personal and individual efforts. Group movements, such as political upheaval or revolutions, will not make a mark during this year.
- The Year of the Monkey 2016 is a good year to break free and take calculated risks. Business flourishes and risks tend to pan out.

Ha, well hopefully the break free part will apply to her when she’s much older, not this year!
Do you have any favorite books for little ones about Chinese New Year?
Hi Becky! We have a book called “Celebrating Chinese Festivals” that describes all holidays, including Chinese New Year (I wrote about it here: https://www.biculturalmama.com/2014/06/asian-childrens-books-from-tuttle.html) Here’s another book that I haven’t read yet, but it’s by Grace Lin who is a very popular and well-known author of children’s books: http://www.overstock.com/Books-Movies-Music-Games/Bringing-in-the-New-Year-Hardcover/2536347/product.html

Thanks, Maria! I have a new honorary niece that is also bicultural – Vietnamese and Lebanese. I found red envelopes (with Vietnamese writing instead of the more common Chinese – score!) for her one month celebration and New Year, but wanted to find some fun books for her too. Thanks for your help!
What a cool and unique mix! That’s great you were able to find some envelopes with Vietnamese writing on it. You’re such a thoughtful auntie!
