“The Whale and the Caribou” Picture Book

Note: Thank you to author S. R. Schwartz for providing a copy to review. All opinions are my own.

Whale and the Caribou Cover

The Whale and the Caribou, a new picture book and the second one by S. R. Schwartz, is a layered story that offers more than meets the eye. When a whale becomes curious about a tiny piece of land he sees far away, the other whales discourage him from learning more, stating “We have all the things we need right here!” and “My mom told us we can get stuck on that land. Better to keep away!”

Nevertheless, the curious whale swims to the land far away where he meets a creature he has never seen before – a caribou. Though they look quite different and live in different environments, the two animals soon discover that when they look beyond differences in appearances, they actually have much in common.

The story of these two animals touches upon diversity and acceptance. The themes parallel the real world, encouraging readers to have an open mind and be curious about things that are different.

Colorful, vibrant illustrations bring the story to life to capture children’s attention. Back matter includes fun facts about whales. The Whale and the Caribou would make a great gift for children and educators who enjoy nature and embrace diversity.

About the Author

S. R. Schwartz lives in Long Island, New York, and is a new children’s book author with a passion to make reading fun and inspirational. Each book uses colorful illustrations to keep the stories visually interesting for children as well as adults!

Mr. Schwartz says, “My passion is bringing colorful storybooks to young minds, infusing emotional and social themes that children can soak up each time they go back to the book. I hope each storybook’s message opens your child’s eyes to the beauty in nature and within ourselves.”

These stories are for young readers entering pre-K or attending elementary school. Each book can be enjoyed at home or in the classroom by teachers interested in the book theme. Mr. Schwartz provides his storybooks in good old-fashioned paperback format only. He says, “I’ve always felt there is something special about having that favorite book on a bookshelf to pull down for storytime with my own son. Why not continue that tradition for younger parents whose kids may get too caught up in the digital world? Parent-child reading time is such a special and rewarding moment. It’s kind of a fleeting moment, kids grow so fast!”
