Taking care of yourself should be a no-brainer. If that’s the case, why does it seem so difficult? For every bit of advice you’re given about what you should do to become a healthier you, there is an equally persuasive argument convincing you to do something else. With conflicting information being thrown at you from every direction, know what information is accurate. Stick with the basics instead of trendy fads.

The first step in getting in control of your health is focusing on what you put into your body. It’s not until you pay attention to what you eat that you realize where you may be going wrong. Take steps to shift your diet from empty carbs and processed foods to more wholesome alternatives.

In simpler terms, make sure you are eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Separate yourself from sugary drinks, especially soda, and work on increasing your water intake. Drinking more water helps your body to eliminate toxins through sweat and urine. It also improves blood circulation and helps your body to absorb nutrients by aiding digestion. 

Help your body get the vitamins and minerals it needs by supplementing your diet with vitamins. Starting a vitamin subscription will help make sure you have what you need on hand without running out. Taking a multivitamin with a meal can help to build your immune system. 


One of the first things you sacrifice with a hectic schedule is your sleep. Don’t underestimate the importance of getting around 7-8 hours of sleep a night. By getting adequate sleep, you can help boost your immune system. It will allow your body the restful time it needs to make sure your organs recoup after a busy day keeping your body running as it should. Not only that, people who rest as they should are more focused and less likely to have heart attacks or get into car accidents. 

End Bad Habits

Oftentimes you may justify bad habits as a vice. Stop fooling yourself; admit you have bad habits, then work on eliminating them. The amount of information available about the adverse effects of smoking and drinking too much alcohol has been proven time and time again. Instead of reaching for junk food to comfort you after a stressful day, find a healthy alternative. 

Deal With Stress 

Stress is unavoidable. If there were a way to eliminate stress, that would be a dream come true. But since you live in the real world and not on Fantasy Island, the best you can do is recognize stress and then manage it. Everyone deals with stress differently. What’s important is finding what works best for you. For some people, meditation and gentle stretching, like yoga, work well. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, find out what works for you. Take time to cuddle up with your cat and read. Indulge in a sappy romance film. Take your dog for a walk. It doesn’t matter what you do, just make sure you are doing something to destress

Nurture Relationships 

Becoming healthier isn’t just taking care of your body and what you put into it, it also involves your mental health. Those who have good relationships with friends and family have the support network they need when times are tough. Even though having positive relationships are important during troubling times, laughter is the best medicine. Don’t underestimate the importance of friends and family and their positive impact on your mental health. 

Don’t beat yourself up about what you aren’t doing to take care of yourself. Instead, focus on becoming a healthier you. The small changes you make can improve your health!
