When some people hear the word “ramen,” they envision prepacked dried noodles that have become a staple in college dorms and homes. But ramen is so much more.

This popular Japanese noodles dish, believed to be of Chinese origin, has a rich history spanning over a century. Traditionally served with a thick broth simmered from meat, bones, and vegetables, ramen can be topped with egg, pork, fish cakes (kamaboko), green onions, and sea vegetables like seaweed.

In the new picture book RAMEN FOR EVERYONE written by Patricia Tanumihardja and illustrated by Shiho Pate, a young boy named Hiro aspires to make the perfect bowl of ramen just like his dad who learned from his own dad. But when things don’t go according to plan, Hiro feels frustrated and sad.

With encouragement from his dad, Hiro tries again and puts his own unique spin on each bowl of ramen that he makes for his family members. Hiro realizes that his ramen doesn’t need to be perfect, and with practice and patience, his ramen-making skills will evolve.

Colorful and expressive illustrations capture the action and energy of Hiro and his dad as they make this special dish. Resources in the back of the book include the history of this noodle, suggested kitchen rules, and an easy miso ramen recipe.

This wonderful book will not only make young readers hungry for ramen but will also invite them to learn more about Japanese culture.
