In the 2000’s, I lived in New York City. I subletted an apartment in Greenwich Village and loved exploring the city. One day I wandered into Pearl River Mart in Soho. My eyes widened as I took in the sight of a huge array of Asian goods, more than I could have imagined. From Chinese slippers and kitchen ware to tea and home decor, Pearl River Mart had everything in one mega store. In fact, Pearl River Mart was the world’s first Chinese American department store. Opened in 1971, the retailer became an iconic part of New York City for both Asians and non-Asians alike. In my memories of living in Manhattan, I fondly recall Pearl River Mart and all the cool, unique items I found in this one-of-a-kind place.

To the dismay of New Yorkers, the beloved Pearl River Mart shuttered it’s doors a couple years ago due to due a five-fold rent hike. It was an end of an era…or so we thought. Fortunately Pearl River Mart continued its presence as an online retailer and evolved into a beautiful, user-friendly site that offered the same vast variety of Asian goods. In November 2016, Pearl River Mart opened a brick-and-mortar store in Tribeca to the delight of its loyal customers.

As a big fan of Pearl River Mart, I am thrilled to see this family-owned business revived and thriving. I had the opportunity to review one of Pearl River Mart’s newest products called The Friendship Box. The bimonthly subscription box is based on the founders’ mission to bring Asia and America together through friendship by sharing food and culture.

Each bimonthly crate features a different Asian theme. Recipients will find snacks, fun products from Pearl River Mart, and exclusive items from special guest curators (mostly Asian and Asian-American chefs, designers, and entrepreneurs). Last month’s Lunar New Year themed-box kicked off the launch of these boxes. The current Friendship Box theme is noodles. Guest curators LUCKYRICE, producers of Asian culture culinary experiences across the globe, have handpicked several of the goods as well as the signature recipe cards shared.
