I grew up in Michigan, the Great Lakes State. Much of the state is still untouched with vast forests, fields, hills, and of course, lots of crystal blue lakes. The new nonfiction picture book, Our Michigan! We Love the Seasons, celebrates the splendor of this state’s changing seasons.
Oil on canvas illustrations by acclaimed Michigan wildlife artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen captures the state’s natural beauty through four seasons. This same illustrator is also known for his artwork in Michigan’s official state children’s book, The Legend of Sleeping Bear. He captures a similar calming look and feel in his paintings in Our Michigan! We Love the Seasons.
The images in the book reminded me of the outdoor activities my family and I have experienced in Michigan. We’ve especially enjoyed swimming in the lakes, hiking in forests, and climbing sand dunes.
The whimsical and imaginative text brings readers into postcard moments. Sample text includes:
Racing through golden
woods, hearing dry leaves
Snap! Crackle! Pop!
Back matter includes arts and crafts activities such as “How to Make a Flower Chain” and “How to Press Fall Leaves.” All the activities use natural elements to connect children with the outdoors.
Our Michigan! We Love the Seasons is ideal as a read-aloud or for independent reading for children in kindergarten through Grade 3. It’s a lovely keepsake book that would make for a great present for those who love the Great Lakes State and the outdoors.
