Melaleuca Tea Tree Oil – 15 Uses to Purify, Soothe, and Refresh the Body and Home
Melaleuca, also known as tea tree oil, is found in many personal care products. There’s a good reason for this. Melaleuca has amazing purifying properties. Hailing from Australia, the Melaleuca (or tea tree) plant produces a powerful cleansing essential oil with a slightly herbaceous aroma.
I’m not a huge fan of Melaleuca’s aroma, but I know it works well. For me, that’s what matters. I want an effective, natural, and holistic alternative for my family and I. We use this oil daily as there are so many uses. I’ve listed below the many ways you can use Melaleuca essential oil for everything from cleansing and purifying the skin to encouraging healthy nail growth and more!
Skin Irritation Soother

When I get acne, the first thing I reach for is Melaleuca instead of over-the-counter acne medicines which may contain cancer-causing chemical ingredients. Melaleuca works very well to quickly reduce blemishes. Why? Because it contains a high concentration of monoterpene alcohol terpinen-4-ol which has been researched extensively as a topical solution for several skin concerns.
For blemishes or occasional skin irritation, apply a drop of Melaleuca directly to the skin. Do not apply directly all over the face! Essential oils are powerful. Test it out first. Dot a drop of Melaleuca oil onto the trouble spot. If no irritation occurs, then you’re good to go. I use a Melaleuca roller bottle that contains fractionated coconut oil which is less irritating to the skin. If you don’t have this, you can use any carrier oil such as applying olive oil or coconut oil onto the spot before putting on the Melaleuca.
Melaleuca works great for soothing insect bites. Mosquitos eat me up alive. They just love the way I smell and will find me within a group of people. Melaleuca is my go-to itch soother for mosquito bites. And it’s not just for mosquitos. When beach sand bugs bit the ankles of my good friend, she tried all types of over-the-counter creams to soothe the nagging itches. I suggested she use Melaleuca. She tried it, and Melaleuca was the only thing that stopped the itch.
Shaving can irritate the skin. Try applying Melaleuca to soothe shaving bumps and soothe the skin. Try making this DIY Shaving Cream using a blend of essential oils. You can even create a homemade Razor Relief Serum for another way to soothe shaving irritation.
Staying out too long in the sun can also irritate the skin. This means you need sun care. When you’re in need of relief, this natural recipe for an After Sun Soothing Spray can help.
Babies can benefit from essential oils, too. For a chemical-free diaper cream that soothes little bottoms and protects them from irritation, make your own Diaper Cream which uses Lavender and Melaleuca essential oils.
Healthy Skin and Hair Support
The ancient Aboriginal peoples of Australia first discovered the purifying and toning facial skin care properties of tea tree oil (Melaleuca). To keep your skin clean, toned, and healthy, try adding one to two drops of Melaleuca to your facial cleanser or moisturizer. You can also make your own Clay Facial Mask using the essential oils of Melaleuca, Lavender, and Frankincense. For a natural way to cleanse your face at the end of the day use homemade natural Makeup Remover Wipes made with essential oils.
Melaleuca is ideal for hair care because of its topical cleansing, rejuvenating, and purifying properties. Many over-the-counter hair care products contain toxic chemicals. This essential oil offers a natural option to gently care for your hair. Add a few drops of Melaleuca to your shampoo to keep hair looking clean and healthy. Cleanser and Refresher
Melaleuca’s same purifying properties for skin and hair can also be applied to the home. This essential oil is ideal for homemade cleaners due to its ability to protect against environmental and seasonal threats*. For a natural surface cleaner and purifier, just add a few drops of Melaleuca oil to a spray bottle with water and use on surfaces throughout the house to deodorize and clean. When we had mold growing in our toilets, I used this mixture to help kill it. For me, it was a better alternative than purchasing chemical-laden cleaners that emitted toxic fumes.
You can also use this same spray to deodorize stinky feet, shoes, and gym bags. For those who practice yoga, try making this Yoga Mat Spray to freshen it up.
To support healthy immune system function*, just add one to two drops of Melaleuca essential oil to water, citrus drinks, or veggie caps.
For a refreshing mouth rinse and breath freshener, add Melaleuca essential oil to water alone or along with Peppermint and Lemon essential oil for an invigorating rinse.
Deep clean makeup brushes with this DIY Makeup Brush Cleanser. With just three simple ingredients you can purify your makeup brushes to remove built-up gunk including dead skin cells.
Purify and freshen air by diffusing Melaleuca essential oil. For a blend, try adding two drops of Lemon, two drops of Eucalyptus, one drop of Melaleuca, and one drop of Peppermint essential oils to your diffuser. This blend can also help to awaken your senses.
