It’s never too early to introduce children to languages. There are so many benefits for kids, everything from the development of their minds to job opportunities in the future. In addition, we live in a multicultural world, and one of the best ways to grow our kids into global citizens is to make them aware of other cultures and languages.
Start by reading books to children. Kids can learn not only by hearing you speak but also by seeing words on the pages. Board books are ideal for the very young. Little fingers can turn the thicker pages in board books more easily and do so without ripping them.
I had the opportunity to review the new board book The Little Mandarin Reaches the Stars written by Elsa Anderson and illustrated by Tais Lemos. This bilingual story in English and Chinese follows the adventures of a little mandarin orange and a pig as they try to visit the moon. It’s a story about friendship and learning that sometimes the things we’re looking for may not be exactly as we thought, but that’s okay.
The story introduces basic Chinese characters to young readers. The illustrations show how certain Chinese characters look like their meanings.
For example, the Chinese word for mountain (山) represents three mountains next to one another with the tallest in the middle. A character guide at the end of the book highlights these special words through visual representations and written explanations.
The Little Mandarin Reaches the Stars is part of the author’s series for “I Can Mandarin” language school which seeks to provide an innovative and engaging Mandarin learning experience. Parents are encouraged to use the books to learn characters and connect with their kids.
