Language Lizard Living in Harmony Book Series

Language Lizard recently released its Living in Harmony book series. It is currently available in English along with bilingual editions in 13 languages with more to come:

  • Amharic
  • Arabic
  • Burmese
  • Chinese (with Pinyin)
  • German
  • Haitian Creole
  • Hmong
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Swahili
  • Telugu
  • Vietnamese

The books include illustrations filled with children from different cultures to reflect the multicultural world young readers live in. The book series uses simple text to teach children about diversity, kindness, friendship, unity, and community. Through the text and illustrations, children will be able to see how they can play a part in all of these.

Language Lizard also offers lessons to support diversity education. The company has worked with teachers to create lesson plans that accompany the themes of the books. As such, parents, educators, and librarians will have access to free multicultural lessons and activities to help children learn more in-depth about the topics of each book.

The books I reviewed were the bilingual Chinese English Living in Harmony books. They’re written in Simplified Mandarin Chinese and include pinyin (the Romanization system for the  Chinese written language). Let’s take a closer look a the three books.

Be Kind (友善 Yǒu Shàn)

By Livia Lemgruber and translated by Candy Zuo

Be Kind shows children the many ways they can be kind and help others. The illustrations show children from around the world such as Yumi donating her old toys to charity to Isabela working on a puzzle with Paulo.

We Can All Be Friends (我们都可以成为朋友 Wǒ men dōu kěyǐ chéng wéi péng yǒu)

By Michelle Griffis and translated by Candy Zuo

We Can All Be Friends acknowledges how we’re all different (a good thing!) and then also shows children how much they have in common. For example, no matter where kids live in the world, they all play, eat, and celebrate.
