Note: Thank you to Barefoot Books for providing a copy to review. All opinions are my own.
One of the best ways for kids to learn is when they don’t realize they’re learning because something is so interesting. The new nonfiction picture book FOOD FOR THE FUTURE: SUSTAINABLE FARMS AROUND THE WORLD provides an accessible way to get kids excited about the future of eco-friendly farming.
Written by Mia Wenjen and illustrated by Robert Sae-Heng, FOOD FOR THE FUTURE: SUSTAINABLE FARMS AROUND THE WORLD [Barefoot Books] highlights a dozen sustainable farms around the globe. The book’s flowing rhyme introduces everything from vertical farms in Singapore to food forests in Kenya.
One of the many strengths of this book is that it emphasizes both Indigenous and modern ways to farm responsibly. Both methods can be effective and will provide eye-opening insight to readers. Inset boxes define keywords used on the pages.
Colorful illustrations with happy characters bring the text to life. Back matter includes in-depth information on sustainable farming, food justice, and the farming methods in the book.
FOOD FOR THE FUTURE: SUSTAINABLE FARMS AROUND THE WORLD is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection. It was also chosen by dPICTUS as one of the Top 100 Emerging Picture Books in the World for 2023 and was featured at the Bolognia Children’s Book Fair.
In a time when climate change affects us all, FOOD FOR THE FUTURE: SUSTAINABLE FARMS AROUND THE WORLD brings hope that the next generation will make eco-friendly choices regarding future agriculture production.
