Everyone experiences feelings of stress, and children can feel it as much as adults. As such, if we’re able to provide children with tools to address these feelings, they will feel more empowered. A new picture book, Creating Calm in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1: Relaxation and Grounding Techniques for Kids by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Melissa Munro Boyd, can help children in this regard.

The book teaches relaxation and grounding techniques to help children focus on what’s around them and to be in the moment. It guides them on how to manage feelings and behaviors with healthy coping skills. The story includes tips on how to relax, be mindful, and interact with others in a positive way.

As the title suggests, teaching kids to relax and ground themselves can be as easy as 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. This grounding technique helps minds and bodies to feel calm. It involves using the five senses: Eye (see), Hand (feel), Ear (hear), Nose (smell), and Mouth (taste).

The book is written in rhyme and features colorful, expressive illustrations to capture children’s attention. The children featured in the illustrations are diverse to reflect the world around us. It also offers a lens for children of various backgrounds to see themselves in the books they read.

About the Author

Melissa Munro Boyd, is a wife, mother of 3, Clinical Psychologist, and officer in the United States Army. Dr. Boyd has spent much of her clinical career treating service members with behavioral health disorders, including PTSD. Prior to the military, Dr. Boyd worked with children in the Philadelphia School District. She is a proud graduate of Hampton University in Virginia where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Upon graduation, she attended La Salle University where she obtained her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Through it all, God and her family have been a constant source of strength and motivation.
