Covid Feelings Workbook

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted us all. It has been tough not only for adults but also for the kids. The pandemic has disrupted their education, routines, and sense of safety. Kids don’t always know how to express their feelings, and sometimes the adults around them may not know how to how to address these issues. This is new for them, too.

Shearin and John Lee saw that their 10-year-old daughter, Aliyah, was feeling sad and scared due to Covid. The husband-wife couple, who are children’s book authors and founders of global education site Joy Sun Bear, decided to do something about it. Together with their daughter, they created Big Changes, New Adventures! A Covid Feelings Workbook.

Shearin states, “This book is very personal with me creating it with my girl and including a lot of what I learned on my personal healing journey in it. Kids are feeling so many intense emotions due to the pandemic, and that is on top of what they already face in life.”

She explains that the purpose of the Covid Feelings Workbook is to help kids work through their confusing and overwhelming emotions they may be feeling during these difficult times. A doctor of psychology has reviewed and approved the workbook.

“We would love to help as many families as possible as the mental and emotional well-being of our children is so important,” Shearin says.

Big Changes, New Adventures! A Covid Feelings Workbook explores five main emotions: Scared, Sad, Mad, Disgusted, and Happy. Through kid-friendly fun activities and exercises, kids will learn about accepting and processing their feelings. This is done through practicing self-awareness and compassion, mindfulness exercises, creative writing and drawing ideas, breathing and movement techniques, and more.

The workbook features lovable animal characters from the authors’ global educational website Joy Sun Bear. Join fun characters Joy, Ayu, Tipah, and Kinti as they guide children through the workbook activities, offering friendly support so kids gain a better understanding of their feelings.

The book is targeted at children ages 7 to 12 years old, but younger children can still benefit from using it.

My daughter couldn’t quite read everything yet, but with my help, I was able to explain the activities. At 130 pages long, the workbook offers a wide range of things for kids to do. We skipped around the workbook to focus on certain sections she was most interested in, and that’s okay. The workbook offers flexibility.

As a parent, I appreciated the guidance the book provided to help me better discuss the pandemic in an age-appropriate way and how to help my daughter process her feelings.
