When kids learn Mandarin Chinese, one of the first word categories they learn is colors. Young children use colors to discern objects from one another long before they say their first word. They rely on their sight to learn about the world, which is why they’re drawn to bright colors. This makes Chinese New Year Colors by Richard Lo the perfect starter book for young learners.

Chinese New Year Colors by Holiday House Publishing Inc. was recently released as both a picture book and a board book for the very young. This bilingual color concept book features traditional objects from Chinese New Year which is China’s biggest holiday. Each page spread showcases an image with one color along with the color’s corresponding word in English, traditional Chinese, and pinyin (the romanization system for Standard Chinese in China).

For example, Chinese New Year firecrackers grace the first page with the word “Red” and the Chinese equivalent word “红 Hóng.” Along with the colors of the rainbow, the book also includes some less common ones like Cerulean. Even parents may learn some new things!

My daughter enjoys viewing the bold, vivid colors and beautiful illustrations. We collaborate throughout the book with her saying the color she sees and me speaking the pinyin on the page. She then repeats the Chinese word. This helps her to learn and retain the Chinese English words for the color.

The back of the book includes additional information on Chinese New Year symbols and their meanings. It’s a great resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers who want to teach children about this important holiday.
Chinese New Year Colors is ideal for children ages 3-7 years old. It would make for a great gift for kids for Chinese New Year, birthdays, or any other day. Purchase your own copy on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Indiebound.
