Cara’s Kindness Picture Book by Kristi Yamaguchi
Disclosure: I received a copy of Cara’s Kindness by Kristi Yamaguchi to review. All opinions are my own.

When I was a young girl I looked up to Olympian figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. Not only was she a gold medalist who skated with incredible athleticism and gracefulness, but she was also a fellow Asian American. It was rare (and still is) to see an Asian American athlete on the U.S. team in the Olympics. Seeing someone who looked like me excel in the most respected competition in the world gave me a sense that I, too, could achieve anything if I worked hard.
Kristi Yamaguchi is not only an accomplished Olympian, she’s also a Dancing with the Stars champion and New York Times Bestselling picture book author. Last month she released her newest picture book Cara’s Kindness published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky.
I had the opportunity to review this book, and I thought the topic of kindness was particularly relevant given current events. The story of Cara’s Kindness revolves around the concept of positive karma, or as the book states, “When you pass on some kindness, it might make its way back to you…”
In Cara’s Kindness, Cara the Cat is trying to figure out the perfect song for her new ice-skating routine. A friend in need comes to the ice rink, and in the process interrupts Cara’s song efforts. But Cara doesn’t mind because she wants to help her friend. She just asks her friend to pay the kindness forward.
Throughout the story, children see how simple acts of kindness have a ripple effect. My daughter loved the book and said, “I like how everyone is being nice to each other because others have been nice to them.”
Cara’s Kindness is for ages 4 and up. It’s the type of picture book you want your children to read. It teaches them empathy and shows how being kind can make a big difference in the lives of others and yourself.
A portion of Kristi Yamaguchi’s profits from Cara’s Kindness will benefit early childhood literacy programs supported by her Always Dream Foundation. Her non-profit organization strives to inspire underserved children to reach for their dreams. The organization accomplishes this through innovative reading programs and by advancing the cause of early childhood literacy.
