DIY Brown Sugar Body Scrub with Essential Oils
A body scrub is great for exfoliating and moisturizing skin. But most store-bought body scrubs are not only expensive but also contain synthetic ingredients and fillers such as dyes and fragrances. These can be toxic to your body.
It’s super easy to make your own body scrubs. The recipe below uses only four ingredients and is quick to make. Put a bow and a label on it to make them gift-ready for birthdays, holidays, or any celebration. Or just keep it for yourself because you deserve some pampering, too!
Ingredient Notes
Brown Sugar – Brown sugar is ideal for body scrubs because they’re smaller particles and more gentle than other exfoliating ingredients like salt. Despite its smaller particle size, it’s still effective in scrubbing away dead skin cells.
Turbinado Sugar – This is a larger-grain sugar that has a golden hue and helps with deeper exfoliation. Most grocery stores carry turbinado sugar or you can find it on Amazon.
Fractionated Coconut Oil – Fractionated Coconut Oil is coconut oil with the fat removed to keep the oil in liquid form to prevent it from solidifying. I use doTERRA’s Fractionated Coconut Oil because I know it’s pure and made without synthetic fillers.
Essential Oils – Adding essential oils not only provides natural health benefits but also smells great! I use dōTERRA essential oils because they do not contain synthetic fillers and toxins. Containers
When you make your own recipes with essential oils, be mindful of the container type you use. Many essential oils contain compounds that can leach into the plastic. To be safe, use glass, steel, or a high-quality plastic called HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene).
For this body scrub recipe, I used 8 oz. glass Ball jars. Another option would be to use a more shallow but wider jar for easier scooping access (also called wide-mouth jars).
Suggested Essential Oil to Use
You can add a single oil to your body scrub or experiment with a combination of oils. If doing a combination, just make sure the total number of drops added is 15 drops. Here are some suggested essential oils to use. In my recipe, I used Wild Orange and Ginger, but you can use whatever you want.
- Any citrus oil like lemon, orange, grapefruit, lime, and bergamot – Great for uplifting mood.
- Lavender – Very calming and relaxing
- Peppermint – Great for invigorating the senses
- Orange & Peppermint – This combination can help with focus.
- Orange & Lemon
- Ginger & Lime
- Ginger & Orange
- Lemon & Lime
- Orange, Lemon, Peppermint – An ideal combination to combat seasonal respiratory irritation.
- Bergamot & Lime
DIY Brown Sugar Body Scrub with Essential Oils
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup turbinado sugar
- 1/2 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 15 drops of essential oils
Instructions
- Combine the brown sugar, turbinado sugar, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and essential oils in a glass container. Stir well until combined. Store in air-tight container.
- To use, apply a small amount to hands and then apply to the body in the shower until the sugar dissolves. Rinse with warm water.
Notes
Suggested Single Essential Oils: Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Lime, Bergamot, Lavender, Peppermint.
