Iceland Comes Out On Top

Iceland came in first place with Hafragrautur (oatmeal) which they serve with Skyr yogurt, fruit, coffee and cod liver oil. This breakfast is high in protein, fiber, and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. It’s also low in fat and salt.

Mexico Comes in Last

With a breakfast of fried corn tortillas, green salsa, cheese, and refried pinto beans, this meal came in at the highest calorie count of 1295 calories. Though undoubtedly yummy, it may not be a meal to consume every day if you’re watching your weight.

Healthier Swaps

Award-winning dietitian Harriet Smith provides these suggestions for healthier swaps:

  • Instead of having fruit juice, swap for whole fruit. Not only will it fill you up more, it will also provide some all-important fiber.
  • Sometimes it’s just down to preparation – grill instead of fry.
  • Replace a high fat item for a veggie option. For example, instead of two sausages, have one and add avocado, mushrooms or a couple of spoonfuls of beans.
  • Breakfast is a great meal to add more fiber into your diet. Adding beans or wholemeal toast is a quick and easy way to increase your intake.
  • Add protein to your plate as it’ll keep you feeling fuller for longer. Scrambled, poached eggs, or yogurt are ideal.

Now that you’ve seen what other countries are eating for breakfast, give some of the healthier ones a try to change up your breakfast routine. Don’t forget to try swapping some foods out for healthier options. Enjoy your meal!
