‘Beyond the Tiger Mom’ East-West Parenting Guide

Disclosure: I received a copy to review. All opinions stated are my own.

Beyond the Tiger Mom BookWhat does it mean to be a Tiger Mom? Several years ago Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua saturated the media with its provocative story of one mother’s strict upbringing of her children. The polarizing book brought out both supporters and haters and in the process came to define Asian parenting whether fairly or not.

The term “Tiger Mom” became part of the vernacular conversation in parenting circles, and now one mom has delved into Asian and Western parenting styles to create Beyond the Tiger Mom East-West Parenting for the Global Age by Maya Thiagarajan [Tuttle Publishing].

The author, an educator with an Asian Indian and American background, interviewed hundreds of parents and their children about their values, hopes, fears and parenting styles. She also utilized her teaching experience in the United States and Singapore to add to the narrative. Thiagarajan’s extensive research is captured in her book to create a parenting guide that looks at the strengths and weaknesses of both Asian and Western parenting styles while dispelling the myths that often come to stereotype both.

Examples of Chapters include:

  • Why Are All the Asian Kids on the Math Team?
  • Raising Readers: Is West Really Best?
  • Memorization, Practice, Exams, and Other Things That Asians Love
  • Raising Resilient Children: How Do We Deal with Failure?
  • Twenty-First Century Challenges for East and West: The Metaphors We Make, the Technology We Use, and the Purpose of Education

Thiagarajan offers accessible and practical advice at the end of each chapter with specific tips for Asian and Western parents to bring out the best in their children. She explores topics such as how to help children achieve their maximum academic potential, train children to expand their attention spans, find the ideal balance between work and play, view failure as a learning experience, establish tech-healthy habits, and prime children for success early on.

Thiagarajan ‘s book has garnered praise from one of the most well known Tiger Moms who says, “Beyond the Tiger Mom is a brilliant book—hard-hitting and brutally honest but also balanced, insightful, and funny.” —Amy Chua, author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom
