My family tries to give back by donating time toward trying to get our local libraries back up and running. They haven’t been at 100% since Hurricane Katrina and I really think that libraries are essential in communities.

Eve though we have busy schedules, my family likes to give back to the community in several ways. My wife is the Girl Scout Troop leader for our daughters troop. They hold several community service programs throughout the year. I organize several fundraisers to raise money for my daughter’s school.

I think that is an important idea for kids to learn, giving back. There’s a few things we do, one thing is: Every year around the holidays we set aside a day to go “Toys for Tots shopping”. I take all of my kids shopping to pick out one boy toy, one girl toy, and one baby toy that we donate to Toys for Tots. I have the same type of conversation each time during the trip. How they should be grateful for what they have, make them realize how many blessings they have, and explain the true meaning of Christmas.

We donate DD’s gently used clothes that she’s outgrown/no longer wears and make $ charitable contributions throughout the year to some of our fave charities and causes 🙂

We love giving to the food bank. Also, we donate gifts during the holidays.

We try to donate household items (clothes, cookware) that we no longer need each year to our local thrift store, and my Twitter name is @4StephanieD
My 7-year olddaughter is having a “Birthday Bags” birthday party – she invited 30 friends to our house and each child will bring of cake mix and frosting. At the party, we will decorate and assemble “birthday bags” – each containing cake mix, frosting, candles, a card and a toy. Then my daughter and I will deliver the bags to a local food shelter that provides these bags to families who can’t otherwise provide these things for their child’s birthday.

During christmas we use the “Angel Tree” to buy presents for the unfortunate kids. I love knowing that on Christmas morning we made it possible for a kid to smile just like my kids do.
