Difference Between Cardomom Essential Oil and Dried Herbs

Cardamom, a spice made from the seed pods of various plants in the ginger family, can bring warmth and sweetness to recipes. The recipe below lists using either cardamom essential oil or dried cardamom.

I prefer cooking with essential oils. In this way, my family and I will receive some of the healthy and soothing digestive benefits of Cardamom as well as a big boost in flavor.* Dried herbs lose up to 90% of their healing nutrients and oxygen molecules, but essential oils do not. These health benefits are the main difference between using essential oils versus dried spices which would only provide the flavor benefit.

If you’re using essential oils, make sure to use food-grade pure oils with no synthetic fillers. I use dōTERRA essential oils because they’re transparent with their purity lab results from both internal and third-party tests. Essential oils are concentrated. A little goes a long way. This means that if you consume lower-quality essential oils, your body may be absorbing concentrated amounts of synthetic, harmful ingredients. So be safe when it comes to what you consume.

Recipe Notes

  • For the sweetener, this recipe replaces traditional white sugar with pure maple syrup for added depth of flavor in a more natural, unprocessed way.
  • It is best to add Cardamom directly into any liquid already going into the recipe, as with any oil. This will ensure that you distribute the oil evenly.
  • If using an 8×8 cake pan instead of a loaf pan, bake for 20–30 minutes.
