Note: Thank you to Simon and Schuster for providing a copy to review. All opinions are my own.

Amy Wu and the Warm Welcome is a new picture book written by Kat Zhang and illustrated by Charlene Chua. The book features a young Chinese American girl who meets a new classmate from China named Lin.

Due to a language barrier, Lin is unable to verbally communicate with the other students. Amy attempts to include Lin in activities. He participates but is shy.

At the end of the school day, Amy observes Lin’s father and little sister picking him up. Around his family, Lin brightens up and eagerly chats in Chinese with them. He is like a whole new and different child. This gives Amy an idea.

That evening she asks her mother if she could invite Lin’s family to their dumpling party. Her mother agrees, and with the help of a special banner, Amy finds a way to give Lin a warm welcome.
