AMY WU AND THE RIBBON DANCE is the newest release in a line of books written by Kat Zhang and illustrated by Charlene Chua. Ideal for young readers ages 4-8 years old, the latest installment showcases Amy Wu as she learns about Chinese ribbon dancing.
Amy Wu is always on the move, and the storyline likewise moves the reader along with high energy and excitement. The young protagonist wants to dance and is inspired by the traditional Chinese ribbon dancers she sees on TV.
Here’s a snippet from the book:
Boom! Boom! go the drums.
Clack! Clack! go the bamboo clackers.
The music zips through Amy’s body.
Her toes tap. Her shoulders shimmy.
This is dancing like she’s never seen before.
And it is magic.
Amy decides to have her own dance party and invites friends to come over. But first, she needs to find ribbons to dance with. She struggles to find just the right kind that clicks, snaps, flutters, and twists. Will she be able to find something that works before the party begins?
Bright, bold illustrations capture all the activity as well as the hearts of readers. This uplifting story brings Chinese culture to young readers in an accessible way that may just inspire them to create their own ribbons. They can receive guidance through craft directions at the end of the book on how to make homemade dancing ribbons.
AMY WU AND THE RIBBON DANCE is an enjoyable read for children of all backgrounds who love to move to music.
