Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao Picture Book

If you’re familiar with Chinese cuisine, you’ve probably had a bao. If not, you absolutely have to try one! Bao, or baozi (包子), are steamed buns filled with either sweet or savory fillings. They’re mouthwatering and addictive. Chinese families often make these at home together, and it becomes a bonding experience.
This is where the story starts in the new picture book Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao written by Kat Zhang and illustrated by Charlene Chua. Amy Wu is a feisty and fun Chinese-American girl who can do lots of things like brushing her teeth and tieing her shoe. But she cannot make the perfect bao. Her father, mother, and grandmother can do it, and Amy is determined to do the same.
Amy makes many attempts and faces frustration as her baos end up not quite right. But then clever Amy comes up with an idea that may just solve her problem in her quest to make the perfect bao. Throughout the story, readers see how food celebrates cultures and can bring a family together.
Colorful, vibrant, and expressive illustrations capture the attention of little readers. The back of the book includes a recipe for readers to make their own perfect bao at home.
As a Chinese-American mother, I truly appreciate finding books where my children can see characters who look like themselves doing everyday activities that are a part of their Chinese culture. Seeing a story that includes a favorite food that I grew up with fills me with warmth like a comfortable blanket. I’m glad to see books in the market that represent my heritage and also teaches others about the unique (and delicious!) culture of Chinese-Americans.
